GAM Innovation strategy
Our Supplier Innovation Program uses an open innovation methodology to help solve operational challenges by accessing technological and entrepreneurial capabilities. The initiative identifies and prioritises critical business challenges in the operations, aligned with GAM’s priorities, and launches them to the market. An on-site pilot is subsequently awarded to prove the solution is viable.

Charge On Innovation Challenge
GAM, Rio Tinto and Vale have come together as Founding Patrons, facilitated by Austmine, to create the Charge On Innovation Challenge. This challenge encourages the technology development needed to support the mining industry’s decarbonisation efforts. Reflecting a genuine desire for industry-wide collaboration, other mining companies are invited to join as patrons.
The Challenge is an opportunity for experts in and outside the mining industry to develop and present interoperable technology that safely delivers power to large battery-electric off-road haul trucks while maintaining or improving productivity levels. The electricity will charge a battery, and if applicable, propel the truck. Four hundred kilowatts of electricity is required for each truck to complete a haul cycle (i.e. load, travel, dump, return, queue).
GAM Tailings Challenge
The GAM Tailings Challenge is a global competition aimed at identifying the most innovative companies, startups, consortia, research centers and universities to help transform fresh tailings and create innovative business models.

In Australia we run this Program in partnership with Austmine, one of the leading national representative bodies of the Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sectors.

Innovation success story
BMA's Caval Ridge Mine
While the Supplier Innovation Program was launched in June 2020, a number of pilot projects are already underway. This includes at BMA’s Caval Ridge Mine where the Fixed Plant Maintenance team solved a key business challenge, finding a safer way to perform maintenance on the filter presses that remove moisture from coal rejects at the wash plant.
